The capital of Thailand, Bangkok is an exciting, bustling city and is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. With its friendly locals, endless opportunities for shopping enthusiasts, colourful nightlife, numerous attractions and rich culture, it is easy to see why Bangkok is a travel destination of choice. Visitors will find that there are several ways to get to Bangkok.

By Air – Bangkok has two main airports – Don Muang Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport. The former is located downtown and used to be Bangkok’s main airport before Suvarnabhumi Airport was established. Don Muang Airport now caters mainly to general aviation, chartered flights as well as domestic flights. From here, you can take a taxi from the taxi stand outside the arrivals hall to get to town. The journey will take around half an hour, although this depends largely on traffic conditions. Bangkok is notorious for traffic jams. You may also want to take a train or a bus to get to town. There is a train station located just across the airport. However, do take note that trains are somewhat irregular and it is best to take a taxi if you are traveling alone late at night or if you are struggling with bulky luggage. Public bus is also another option. Buses are numbered, with the numbers signaling their respective destinations, so be sure you are hopping onto the correct bus. There are also free shuttle buses to and from the airport. These shuttle buses end at Lad Phrao train station.

Suvarnabhumi Airport is near to the east of Bangkok. It is Bangkok’s main airport and most international visitors flying in will land here. It caters to both domestic flights as well as international flights. There are also a number of budget airlines flying here. Although there is only one terminal, the airport is very big and is able to handle the large crowds. However, it is somewhat easy to get lost or confused so do take note of where you should be going and keep an eye on your luggage. From the airport, you can get to your intended destination by taking the limousine taxis, ordinary taxis or Airport Express buses. You may also rent a private minivan if you are traveling in a group.

By Bus – If you are traveling from other parts of Thailand, hopping onto a bus to get to Bangkok might be a preferred way to travel. Bangkok has three major terminals: Eastern Bus Terminal, or Ekamai, North and North Eastern Bus Terminal, or Moh Chit, as well as Southern Bus Terminal, also known as Sai Tai Mai. Depending on whether you are traveling to Bangkok from the East, North, North-eastern or Southern parts of Thailand, you will be dropped off at one of these terminals.
