How to avoid tourist traps while on vacation

Author:

Being a tourist is a trap in itself. By studying a map or guide book in the middle of the street is like having a neon sign above your head, and will draw a myriad of touts and hawkers to invade your personal space.

Before you go on holiday do your research either on-line or through travel guides. You’ll soon find out the places to avoid and also the customs of the locals. Avoid places that are used to promote a city or region, you know the Eiffel Tower is not going to be cheap and you’ll have to wade through tacky souvenirs.

Knowing a couple of the main intersections or learning what streets to take to get to and from your hotel will save the “deer in the headlights” look and expensive rides by unscrupulous taxi drivers who’ll take you the long way. Sounding as if you know will make all the difference.

In Bangkok the taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers will tell you that the temple doesn’t open until later or it’s closed and will try and take you to their friend who’s a jeweller. So ensure you’re aware of opening and closing times of places you want to visit.

Being a tourist can be a hazard but with a little pre-planning you can save yourself time money and effort – it’s all about research.
