Planning a vacation: Top ten cities you should visit

Author:

I’ve been to many cities but there are so many more I’d like to go and see, but based on where I’ve been my top ten would be:

1.) New York – An amazing, interesting and vibrant place! I’ve been there twice and would happily go back many times. There was a real buzz about it and there is so much to see and do. A great mix of people too!

2.) Cape Town – I spent 2 weeks in South Africa and I thought Cape Town was a fantastic place. When you see Table Mountain for the first time it really takes your breath away! I took a trip over the Robben Island where Nelson Mandela had been imprisoned and it is an experience I will never forget.

3.) Hong Kong – I was lucky enough to grow up there and it is a very special place to me. The view from the top of the peak is phenomenal and the skyline view from the harbour is fantastic. The people in Hong Kong and wonderful and the shopping is brilliant!

4.) Bangkok – I’ve been to Bangkok several times and it’s definitely a firm favourite with me. The shopping is superb and the Thai food is mind blowing! If you go there don’t eat at hotels or expensive restaurants – the food at the street cafes or food courts is the best by far! The night market is full of great bargains and the Elvis impersonator shows are wonderful fun.

5.) Phnom Penh – I went to Cambodia about 12 years ago and it was one of the most humbling experiences. The people were so helpful and friendly and even though a lot of them had nothing they were the happiest people I have ever met! The countryside is stunning too and it was a privilege to see it.

6.) Amsterdam – As a city this place has everything. It’s very easy to get around on foot or the excellent tram system. There’s a wonderful mixture of culture, history, art and of course the other things that Amsterdam is famous for! I spent 4 days there and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The canals are a wonderful sight and there is such a mix of bars and restaurants that there is definitely something for everyone.

7.) Valence D’Agen – Not sure if this qualifies as a city, more of a small country town in the South West of France. I’ve spent a lot of time here over the summers and it’s a lovely town that just has a lovely feel to it. The pace of life suits me to a tee and is so far removed from the hustle and bustle of the rat race. The wine is cheap, the food is amazing – plenty fresh vegetables, fruit and meat and the weekly market is not to be missed.

8.) Edinburgh – I have to put this is as I live here! Edinburgh is a great city though – very easy to get around, history by the bucket full and plenty to see and do. There’s something almost magical about it. If you haven’t already been to Edinburgh then I promise you a warm welcome awaits you.

9.) Dublin – What a super place! The bars are fantastic, the restaurants are fantastic, it is easy to navigate and the Guinness is sensational! I’m not a Guinness drinker normally but in Dublin it was so good it is all I drank. (Alcohol wise I mean, I did drink water etc.. too!) The Irish are a marvellous nation with a great sense of humour and the best hospitality.

10.) Last but not least Mobasa in Kenya. I was only about 5 when I went here but I have great memories of it. I remember going on safari and seeing so many beautiful animals in the wild. I think I’ll definitely need to go back to give a more up to date account on this one!
