Ever been to Bangkok? Or planning to visit “Krung Thep” – the city of angels?
Those who have been to Bangkok may not have really enjoyed the traffic. Long traffic jams, plethora of cars and a choking pollution can make your trip a miserable one. But who cares. They got some unique mode of transport, which can be an adventure for a visitor in the city.
Lets start with some unique one’s before talking about the vernacular ones.
TUK-TUK – Remember the Visa advertisement where Pierce Brosnan get the ride of his life. Oh he would have liked to shrug of his Bond image. Tuk-tuk is a “cabin-cycled” kind of transport. Colorful in looks, it is open from two sides and makes a lot of noise. For visitors coming to Thailand – this is a fun way of getting the glimpse of the city. No need to pull your windows down. Its open. And emits a lot of pollution. But because of its squeezed size – it moves quite efficiently (compared to cars, buses) even in thick traffic. And they have handlebar control (instead of steering wheels). But it can be as costly as AC Taxis.
MOTORBIKES – Well, now we are fast. Where a taxi ride will take 30 minutes, a motorbike will do that in ten. Popular among locals, motorbikes is the fastest mode of transport.
TAXIS – Normal taxis. Usually Toyota Corolla’s. Very economical compared to other cities of world. The best thing is most drivers can speak English decently – a great relief for tourists. You may see fares jumping up late-night or during traffic jams. Tipping is not customary but gets you a greeting smile from the cabbie.
BUSES – Nothing special. There are AC and Non-AC buses.
BTS SKYTRAIN – Very good. Real time-saver amidst Bangkok traffic.
UNDERGROUND TRAIN – Just like BTS Skytrains – but runs underground.
So when in Bangkok, you know exactly what to do.
