One night in Bangkok…
The biggest thing I learned here is to ALWAYS get to know the money when arriving in a new country. Whenever possible, take 12 to 24 hours to make conversions, and also to find out what things are worth. It is good to see how much to tip, and if tips are in fact customary in this country. It is also good to find out if you should bargain. For instance, in Thailand or Indonesia, they will have a starting price that is very high, expecting you to beat them down. In Vietnam, however, the asking price is the final one, and haggling will get you nowhere.
People had sternly warned me to take the recommended 24-hour no spend time, but I had to find out for myself…
Here’s what transpired in Bangkok…
We arrived with over 1500$ between us, for what was to be 2 weeks. My brother just loves to act like a big shot, and we thought we were rich here in Thailand. At the airport, we bought 2 bottles of Bordeaux wine for what we thought was a great price, but later turned out to be 60$ a bottle…
That night, we went to a restaurant, and then got most of our Japanese yen converted into baht. Man, were we rich! On Kaho San road (a street that is composed of mostly foreign patrons), we were accosted by a took took driver. I forget his name, but he was immediately our friend, and obviously had our best interest at heart. (We were drunk by this time)
Of course, we wanted to get away from the white people. On we went with this very honest took took driver to discover Bangkok! We bought hash to smoke; about a gram for 1200 baht (maybe 40$ In Chiang Mai, we would pay a third that price). We then went bar hopping, and bought tee-shirts at the Hard Rock Cafe. At some point we saw a cock fight in some seedy place, but that is vague, as we were drinking heavily. When our beloved driver suggested a massage, we readily accepted!
Cupidy Massage is, I have no trouble believing, the highest class massage place in the city. I felt like a kid in a candy store as we walked in, and with good reason.
The place was like a very big and classy club, with a delightful twist.
Behind a huge window; as big as a department store’s, were seated, in a
four row high set of rafters, over 100 beautiful Thai women. Each was wearing a
number and a bright smile. To the side of us, and in the actual club, were a
small crowd of even lovelier women, all seated in a sort of box. These also
sported numbers, but
